In this video i work through ways of ‘jazzing up’ a simple progression.

  1. we start with a 1625 progression in C ( C / Am / Dm / G)

    –0–0–1–3—————-
    –1–1–3–0—————-
    –0–2–2–0—————-
    –2–2–0–0—————-
    –3–0–0–2—————-
    –0–0–x–3—————-

    Add diatonic 7th ( CMaj7 / Am7 / Dm7 / G7)

    –X–X–X–X—————-
    –5–5–6–3—————-
    –4–5–7–4—————-
    –5–5–7–3—————-
    –3–X–5–X—————-
    –X–5–X–3—————-

    We then add a minor 3 chord (Em) to replace the tonic ( Em7 / Am7 / Dm7 / G7) as they share chord tones (Cmaj7 – C E G B) (Em7 – E G B D) so if your playing with a bassist playing C your creating a Cmaj9 chord which has a nice strong tonic function.
    ( Em7 / Am7 / Dm7 / G7)

    –X–X–X–X—————-
    –8–5–6–3—————-
    –9–5–7–4—————-
    –9–5–7–3—————-
    –7–X–5–X—————-
    –X–5–X–3—————

We then proceed to make the E and the D into minor 9 chords whilst making the A and the G into Dominant 7 #5 chords

    –X–X–X–X—————-
    –7–6–5–4—————-
    –7–6–5–4—————-
    –5–5–3–3—————-
    –7–X–5–X—————-
    –X–5–X–3—————

Notice the chromatic decent on the B and G strings… thats good shit.

  2. great lesson thanks for sharing!
